TIME TRAVEL 54 takes a second look at Surrey Street Rodder Harold Martin’s cine film starting at the 5th SSR Wheelsday held for the first time at Slyfield on Good Friday 1979 including The Sweeney, Vanpire, Hot’n’Bothered, Rob Whitwell’s Jago ‘32 coupe, Martin Bonner’s high-riding ‘55 and me in my Sunbeam Rapier.... Then a look at some of the machines arriving at Brighton for the Street Machine Magazine London to Brighton cruise including the French Connection Mustang, Discotrucker, White Heat, Desperado etc... Next it’s the 1979 NSRA Billing run including the ‘32 roadsters of Derek Chapman and Merv Barnett, John Wilkinson’s ‘32 sedan and Ken Stamp’s ‘32 pick-up etc.. and the Spirit of the 50s line up. Then on to Beaulieu and the Southern Roadsters annual run which was pre ‘49 for the first time and included Tony Theron’s 60s style T. Harold took his cine camera round to fellow Surrey Street Rodder Dave Warren’s place for a look at his project Jag powered Pop and then on to the 5th NASC Nats at Knebworth where I manage to walk in front of the camera with my cine camera in hand as I was also there filming the action which appears in Time Travel 32. Boston Strangler, Bob Rothwell’s Y, Adrian Sidwell’s Opus, Paul Haigh’s A roadster, Rubellion etc and a huge turnout of Pops are all featured. On to Beaulieu 1980 and a look at the driving games as Fred Claydon in his Morris Van and Pete Fowler, Jeff Caves and John Hockley have a go in their Pops, then back to Knebworth including the Kustom Consuls of Dave Prichard and Tom Newton, Martin De’aths C Cab, A Flat Minor etc... On to 1981 and the SSR Wheelsday as Ron, Andy and Jeff Harris leave some rubber behind in their small block Ford powered Zephyrs also Clive Miles’ lowrider, Len Beech’s Dorset, Mark Tanner’s ‘34 Minx, Phil Rutherford’s ‘32 roadster, Pete Leddy’s T Bird etc.. are filmed leaving Slyfield. Then it’s back to Beaulieu as Harold films the rods cruising through the New Forest and then the driving games as Undelivery, Novel T, Hillbilly Express, Archie McDiarmed in his Pop and Bernie Chodosh in his A sedan join in the fun. Next we’re back at Knebworth for the 1981 Nats including the Hot Rod and Custom project Pop, Ian Dawes and Jeff Cousins’ Pops, Matt Matheou’s boat tail Cord, Mike Taylor’s Devon Gasser etc... Finally a look at the Surrey Street Rodders charity run to Thorpe Park as Harold gets some on the road shots of the club’s cars........
